27 Days To Go: “Awkward Tech”

The Technology In The World Of Project Preservation

An Early El-Baynan Android

It’s been an absolute dream to create an entirely new Sci-Fi universe. Especially the tech. Of course, without revealing any spoilers let me tell you a little bit more about it.

The people of this world became technologically advanced over a very short period of time. A discovery in their past allowed them to reverse engineer advanced technology.

Life on the planet is an awkward mesh of tech and nature. As is evident by the direct design instruction I gave to my cover designer. Those of you who purchase the physical edition, if you look on the back cover you can see ships and vehicles, futuristic structures wedged into the surrounding natural areas.

This was deliberate, and is directly reflective of the tech in the world. Most civilisations have time to “grow into” their innovations. From writing on animal skins, to eventually over time, say… sending emails via computers. It’s gradual. This measured growth takes place over time. El-Bayna (the planet the story of Project Preservation takes place on) almost had that process sped up by means of the enlightenment drive, which is detailed more in the book.

The end product meaning the rush to become technologically advanced, as opposed to a natural paced evolution has given the people ships that travel faster than light, yet they all still communicate via snowy black and white display screens. There is no such thing as an internet in this world, yet they have fully working androids.

Of the advanced tech they do have, the vehicles for example fly via blowing air jets as opposed to highly advanced propulsion.

I like to describe it as awkward-tech. And I thoroughly enjoyed creating it for this world. I hope you enjoy it when reading about it.
