28 Days To Go: Black Sci-Fi
Why an all black main cast?
Tarkin Sotile working at G and Aard Cybernetics
Way back when Project Preservation was a seedling in my mind, I always loved the idea of a Sci-Fi universe I.E. A Star Wars or Star Trek, where most of the cast were black.
Black people didn’t seem to really exist in Sci-Fi when I was growing up, outside of the occasional token appearance. While this never dampened my enjoyment of the genre, I did regularly dream of not only an occasional appearance from a black character, but an entire sci-fi universe of them.
Then, when building the world of Project Preservation in my mind, the main cast almost organically fitted into this loose template. This would be essential for the story purposes, especially the book’s ultimate conclusion.
Of course, having the main cast be an all black one I hope is not only inspiring to other writers, but it allows me to encapsulate all the rich cultures, beliefs and traditions that having a cast like this would entail.
While Project Preservation contains no direct “earth based” black cultures, many will recognise the similarities in mannerism and dress.
